What We Learned in Our First Year as a Start-Up

Starting a business sounds exciting.
Freedom. Growth. Building something of your own.
The reality?
It’s pressure. It’s responsibility. Massive highs — and big lows.
And the fun is figuring it all out as you go.
Over the past year, we’ve gone from an idea… to an operation.
From one... to a growing team
From one department... to three
From offsite... to a premier boutique office
From no clients... to long term partners - with over $5 million raised
Results that reflect our hunger.
And along the way, we’ve learned... a lot.

Expectation vs Reality
What people think a start-up looks like:
Flexible hours
Quick success
Big wins early
What it actually looks like:
Early mornings and big days
Learning through mistakes
Solving problems you didn’t expect
Showing up when you don’t feel like it
There’s no shortcut.
At the end of the day, this is a structured, face-to-face sales role - with clear expectations, daily coaching, and performance-based progression.
Lesson 1: People Are Everything
You can have the best systems, the best product, the best plan. But people are what make it real.
One of the biggest things we’ve seen this year:
When you give someone the right opportunity: clear standards, real responsibility, and the right environment -their growth can be rapid.
Confidence builds.
Skill develops.
Results follow.
And that’s where everything starts to change.

Lesson 2: Standards Define the Business
The best environments don’t happen by accident.
They’re built intentionally.
When expectations are clear, energy is high, and results matter — people level up.
Consistency improves.
Confidence grows.
Standards rise.
And that’s where it becomes enjoyable.
Not surface-level fun, but the kind that comes from:
Progress week to week
Hitting goals
Being part of a team that’s moving forward
Lesson 3: Momentum Beats Perfection
At the start, it’s easy to overthink everything.
Trying to get it perfect.
In reality, growth comes from:
Taking action
Adjusting quickly
Improving as you go
Momentum creates clarity.
Not the other way around.

Lesson 4: You Earn Your Position Every Week
Titles don’t mean much.
Performance does.
In this environment, every week is a chance to improve, build momentum, and move forward.
The more you develop your skills and show consistency, the more opportunity opens up:
More responsibility
More progression
More earning potential
And over time, that compounds into real growth.
Lesson 5: Give it a crack, back yourself and enjoy it!
Life isn’t that serious all the time.
Somewhere along the line, people are told to fall into line - to take everything seriously. To play it safe.
But the truth is:
Take your goals seriously - just don’t take yourself too seriously.
Back yourself. Give it a proper crack. Learn as you go.
Because when you’re in the right environment, pushing yourself and improving, the days fly, the work becomes enjoyable, the money follows… and records get broken

(One of our team nights... Safe to say we all regret not running down the stairs to storm the field with Alex Johnston 🙃 🙃)
What We’ve Built So Far
In 12 months, we’ve:
Built a growing team
Opened our Surry Hills office
Multiple internal promotions
Generated over $5 million in funding for our partners...and growing
Partnered with impactful organisations
Nothing crazy...😛
But real.
And built the right way.
Where We’re Going
We’re just getting started.
The goal is simple:
Scale the team
Develop leaders
Promote a new management team
Acquire new clients
Build something that lasts
Not hype.
Not shortcuts.
Just a business built on performance, people, and standards.
Final Thought
Most people look for certainty before they start.
This year taught us:
You don’t need certainty.
You need to start - and figure it out as you go.
At Pinnacle
We’re not here to build something temporary.
We’re building a team of people who can perform, grow, and lead in any environment.
And... we’re only getting started.
